Attending to Pain & Suffering…with Compassion, Wisdom, Clarity & Resilience

August 9 – 12, 2018

Upaya Zen Center – Santa Fe, NM

Our capacity to attend to the pain and suffering of others as chaplains or simply as helpful friends is clearly dependent upon and proportional to our capacity to attend to our own pain and suffering. One of the pioneers of the Conscious Living and Dying Movement, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross once said that “burnout is a copout,” referencing that what we are facing when we experience burnout is our own unfinished business. In this experiential and mindfulness meditation based program we will explore that liminal space where the limits of our capacity for caring and compassion mingle with our unfinished business… the territory of own pain and suffering for which we have yet to find healing and/or compassion. We will explore our own path to deeper healing and self-compassion and a great capacity for meeting and attending to the pain and suffering of others.

Learning Objectives:

  • Deepening our understanding of the roots of burnout and the wisdom to distinguish pain from suffering.
  • Increasing capacity for managing emotional triggers, stress, and burnout and to facilitate our own self-care in service of sustainable caregiving.
  • Enhancing emotional intelligence and literacy, defined as increased capacity for self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management with increased literacy and awareness of one’s own and others feelings and needs.
  • Employing mindfulness and awareness practices to recognize how best to compassionately serve others and cultivate deeper resilience and compassion.
