Mid-Year Reset: Realigning with Your Goals and Aspirations

By Fleet Maull, Ph.D.

As we reach the halfway point of the year, I recommend taking a step back and reflecting on our journey of personal growth and on the goals and aspirations we set at the beginning of the year. This mid-year reset practice is an opportunity to measure progress, realign ourselves with our core values, and reignite our sense of purpose. Our journey towards self-leadership and personal growth can really benefit from this mid-year reflection to ensure we stay on the path we envisioned for ourselves. I guarantee you, it’s worth your time and effort!

The Power of Purposeful Goal-Setting At the start of the year, many of us set ambitious goals and heartfelt aspirations. Most people are familiar with the tradition of setting New Year's resolutions. These resolutions are often broad, vague, and set with little reflection. Common examples include "lose weight," "exercise more," or "save money." While well-intentioned, these resolutions frequently lack the depth and specificity to inspire sustained action and change. Data shows that a large percentage of New Year's resolutions are abandoned by February, mainly because they are not rooted in a clear understanding of one's values and purpose.

In contrast, a more thoughtful practice of setting goals and aspirations involves a deeper, more introspective process, in which our goals resonate with our deepest values. However, even with such an inspiring beginning, as the months pass, the clarity we had at the start of the year can become clouded by the grind of our daily lives and all the stress and challenges we encounter. It’s, therefore, crucial to revisit our goals and remind ourselves why we set them in the first place. Are these goals still aligned with our purpose? Are they steering us toward the life we truly want to live?

Distractions and Challenges Life is full of distractions and challenges that can easily throw us off track. External influences, such as societal expectations, work demands, and even well-meaning advice from loved ones, can divert us from our path. Additionally, daily disruptions—from unexpected emergencies to the simple busyness of life—can make it difficult to stay focused.

I remember vividly when my wife and I got a puppy. The joy and excitement were immense, but the dog’s arrival completely disrupted our established routines. Morning meditations were cut short, writing sessions were interrupted, and our focus shifted towards training and caring for the new family member. While the experience was enriching, it highlighted how easily our routines can be upended by unforeseen changes, even the most positive ones.

Adaptability: Your Secret Weapon

The key to overcoming these disruptions is adaptability. Life will always present us with challenges and unforeseen events, but how we respond determines our ability to stay on course. With our new puppy, I had to adjust my schedule, find new ways to integrate my goals into my daily life, and, most importantly, remain committed to my aspirations. If we don’t pay attention, monitor our progress, and adapt in order to remain focused on our goals, we risk getting to the end of the year, waking up on Dec 31st, and realizing that another precious year just slipped by. “Life happened,” and our plan went out the window! And as we grow older, this tendency creates more and more pain, as we know we only have a limited number of years available. Consequently, many of us might want to give up.

Reflecting on your own life

But you can do something about it right now! Just stop and ask yourself: Where am I? How am I doing? Consider how much you are directing your actions versus being directed by external factors. Are you really in charge or letting external events dictate your behaviors?  Are you really in the driver's seat of your own life? Are you making conscious choices that align with your goals, or are you being swept along by the endless onslaught of daily demands?

The Power of Journaling Keeping a journal remains one of the most effective ways to stay aligned with your goals. Taking the time to pause and reflect allows you to analyze your daily habits and routines, identify areas for improvement, and ensure that your actions are in harmony with your aspirations. By writing down your thoughts and experiences, you create a record of your journey, making it easier to track progress and make necessary adjustments.

Setting Clear Goals and Chunking Them Down

Clear goals are the foundation of personal growth. However, setting goals is only the first step. It is beneficial to break them down into manageable tasks, making them less daunting and more achievable. Designing a daily routine that supports these tasks is crucial. This routine should include time for reflection, planning, and action, ensuring that each day brings you closer to your goals.

For example, if your goal is to write a book, break it down into smaller tasks like researching, outlining, and writing a certain number of words each day. By incorporating these tasks into your daily routine, you create a structure that supports your progress.

Commitment to Self-Leadership

It’s easy to become disheartened when progress seems slow or when setbacks occur. However, don’t give up on your dreams. Self-leadership means taking responsibility for your life, staying committed to your goals, and continually striving for personal growth. It requires resilience and perseverance, but the rewards are immeasurable.

Reflecting mid-year provides an opportunity to recommit to your aspirations. It’s a chance to acknowledge the progress you’ve made, address the challenges you’ve faced, and realign your actions with your goals.

Try to do an objective assessment of how you have been doing so far this year. As you proceed, feelings of regret or self-blame may come up, but just take a breath, acknowledge them with self-compassion, and let them go. Focus instead on analyzing what happened. Because what we want to do is see what's true, but without any blame or shame. Just see what's true and then reaffirm your commitment to your goals.

Taking Action: A Step-by-Step Guide

To help you make the most of your mid-year reflection, here’s a step-by-step guide to realigning with your goals and aspirations:

  1. Review Your Goals: Take some time to revisit the goals and aspirations you set at the beginning of the year. Write them down and reflect on why they are important to you.

  2. Assess Your Progress: Evaluate how far you’ve come. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, and acknowledge the effort you’ve put in.

  3. Identify Challenges: Consider the distractions and challenges that have impacted your progress. Be honest with yourself about what has thrown you off track.

  4. Reflect on Your Values: Reassess whether your goals still align with your values and purpose. If not, adjust them accordingly.

  5. Adapt Your Routine: Make necessary adjustments to your daily routine to support your goals. This might involve creating new habits, eliminating time-wasters, or finding more efficient work methods.

  6. Commit to Journaling: Start or continue keeping a journal. Use it to track your progress, reflect on your experiences, and plan your actions.

  7. Create an actionable plan for the rest of the year: Chunk your goals into smaller, manageable tasks. Create a clear action plan with specific steps you can take each day.

  8. Seek Support: Engage with supportive networks. Share your journey, seek advice, and offer encouragement to others.
